FAQ's

Below are some of the most common questions people ask about hypnotherapy.

What does hypnosis feel like?

It is important to recognise that hypnosis isn't a feeling as such. Deep relaxation helps the therapist to communicate with the sub-conscious mind. In many cases, clients say that they didn't feel hypnotised. This is because they have had a pre-conception of what it would feel lilke! We all "daydream" in everyday life and this is hypnosis, where we are relaxed and totally absorbed in something in our mind. Generally speaking, the relaxation achieved in hypnosis is a very pleasant experience.

What about confidentiality?

I am registered under the Data Protection Act and all client details are kept secure. All information given during therapy is strictly confidential.

Can I be made to do anything against my will?

No. You are still aware of your mind and body during hypnosis and can come out of hypnosis any time you wish. Remember that hypnotic trance is mainly deep relaxation and you are still alert and aware of everything going on around you.

What safeguards are there?

The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council has a Code of Ethics that all therapists are required to adhere to. This is made available to all clients at the initial consultation.

Will I remember everything that happened during hypnosis?

In most cases, yes. Just as in normal everyday life there are things that you may remember more clearly than others.

What is self-hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is essentially the same as hypnosis induced by a therapist although the depth of relaxation sometimes isn't as deep. Self-hypnosis is similar to meditation in many ways. In meditation the goal is to achieve deep relaxation, whereas in hypnosis relaxation enables positive suggestions and images to be absorbed by the sub-conscious mind.

What happens if I resist being hypnotised?

Then you won't be hypnotised! You cannot be hypnotised against your will. If someone is determined to resist a hypnotist then they will not be relaxed and will not be able to absorb positive suggestions. Hypnosis relies on willingness and co-operation of the client.
